Civilians can also make these extraordinary skydives and there are plenty of opportunities at drop zones around the country. The highest HALO jumps ever were made by Joseph Kittinger (102,800 feet), Felix Baumgartner (128,517 feet), and Alan Eustace (135,889 feet).

Haaf jumped from a Skydive Cross Keys plane, according to the Gloucester County Prosecutor’s Office. He cut his main parachute and tried to deploy a reserve, but the second parachute failed to open, police said. The jumper landed on the busy intersection of Brookdale and Herbert Boulevards in Monroe Township, and was found dead by an officer who responded to the scene.

Witnesses in the neighborhood described hearing a loud noise and seeing a parachute swirling through the air. A woman who lives a block away, Sharon Spera, said she ran out to the backyard and saw the shredded parachute. She called her husband, Angelo, who drove by the scene and called 911.
